FAQ’s

Dog Training or Behaviour what is the difference?

In short the main difference is whether you are wanting to teach your dog something new and progress that or if you are trying to modify and change an already established behaviour.

Is it training?

If you would like to teach your dog new behaviours such as walking with you on the lead if they are currently pulling you, spitting things out of their mouth because currently, they run off with things, sitting around distractions such as other people or dogs instead of running up to everything, it is likely these behaviours have never been taught successfully in the first place so training classes would work well for you.

I have behaviours I want to change

If your dog is growling when you try to take something from them, they are barking at sounds, people or dogs or are showing fear in certain situations then you need to book a behavioural consultation where we can dig into the nitty-gritty of what is going on and help you move forward again.

Training - How Much & For How Long?

We never set you up to be overwhelmed, in fact, short 5-10 minutes of training 2-3 times a day can be far more useful to your dog than one single long session.

Focusing on key skills such as settling, engaging with you around distractions or even learning some basic cues to superior levels. Such as being able to sit when asked once and without needing to be asked to ‘stay’ despite food being dropped in front of them.

Socialisation for adult dogs

These words are often mentioned when a dog shows they are uncomfortable around other dogs or people. All too often you are then told you should ‘socialise your dog more’, but what does this mean and is the park or group classes the place to do it?

The answer is a resounding NO! Group classes, the local park and other busy areas aren’t going to suddenly and magically teach your dog they can cope in the company of other dogs and people. In fact, it often makes them far worse because they are even more overwhelmed. This goes for Daycares too, these places will not ‘fix’ your dog.

Instead, having support and a plan for systematic desensitisation is far more successful and manageable for you and your dog. Booking a behavioural will enable us to help support you and your dog in a way which sets achievable goals and breaks down complex behaviour patterns into an accessible and digestible fashion.

Crate Training - To do or Not to Do, that is the Question

We like to help dogs learn skills for life, and as there is bound to be a time that your dog will need to go to the vets, crate training for us is a way to make this less stressful for them. So whether you use it to help keep them safe and contained overnight or solely to future proof, we do recommend it.

However, NEVER leave your dog in its crate when it is distressed, it will not make your dog like their crate more if you ignore them. Often we suggest starting any crate training during the day, rather than overnight, for adult dogs and build up the time at their pace. If you struggle, get in touch for further support.

Do I need to walk through every door first?

In short, NO!

It isn’t even possible to do this, can you imagine having to jump up to walk through every single doorway before your dog?

Every time they change room, every time they need the toilet and it is pouring with rain, every time they want to go and get a drink etc. It won’t teach your pup anything other than you are very strange. Oh, and if we are being really honest, that you will absolutely follow them everywhere.

Your dog is not trying to take over your life. You control their diet, exercise, access to outside, where they sleep, when and how they do all these things too. Your pup actually has very little control over their own life. Why not treat them like any other family member, with respect and giving them a choice. It will lead to a much healthier long term relationship

Exercise

If your dog is unable to walk with you on a loose lead and appears to go deaf when off lead then more exercise off-lead will not help this.

In fact, you may as well pop on a cap and call yourself a chauffeur as you are simply taking your dog to the park and will be there to drive them home after (or walk obviously).

In any situation whether a park, forest, beach or street, your dog should see you as a highly valuable resource in all these environments, if they don’t then having them off lead is never advisable and frankly, it is against the law.

So for everyone’s benefit, keep your dog on a fixed-length long line until they are able to focus on you no matter what distractions are around.  Over-exercising a dog can result in more energetic and busy behaviour; you are not trying to train an elite athlete, it can also cause long term health issues. Everything in moderation is a far better approach.

ABOUT

Group Online Training Can it Work?

Historically people have been told to attend ‘Group Classes’ with the notion that this is the Number One place for your dog to learn how to behave in society. Sadly, this has long not been the case, in fact if a class is run as a ‘free for all’ where they run around in an enclosed space with limited intervention, all they are learning is to get over excited in the company of other dogs and ignore their humans. This is really not a safe lesson to teach any dog.

Instead it is far better, for all involved, to teach key skills such as Dropping items, learning to offer attention despite distractions, walk well on a lead together, come back when called, stationary positions such as a Sit or Down and Settle alone. All of these can be taught most successfully at home where they are most confident and most likely to progress to superior levels. So this is where we teach all our Group and 1-2-1 lessons.

Puppy Training

“BUt i need my dog to stop jumping all over other dogs”, I hear you cry

In person group classes held in Church Halls or other enclosed facilities are, for us, a thing of the past. Teaching in environments where there are lots of other dogs and people has long been the way everyone taught their dogs, but no more. We always bring our clients the most up to date accessible training techniques and we have identified that learning at home is the absolute BEST way to set dogs and owners up for success in the real world.

At home we can work at your dog’s pace and make sure they are learning in the best possible way, making transferring these skills outside so much easier and much more successful.

We train in calm locations, to help you learn and absorb what we are teaching and when to progress the difficulty. Asking a dog to learn to do a sit whilst you walk away from them is hard, let alone when in a hall with 6 other dogs and many other family members all speaking at once. It isn’t a good way to learn for humans or dogs.

Instead we have cut out all the downsides to group classes and designed state-of-the-art learning in the comfort of your own home. You will learn alongside other dog guardians, where you can share stories, ask questions and access expert training support too.

Testimonials

From Our Clients

Thank you Eryn for the superb online training session today! Having worked with you and Merry for a while now, I don’t know where Monty and I would be without you both and now even under lockdown we can have your excellent support and guidance. Scott and I thoroughly enjoyed the remote training session and found it hugely helpful seeing you demonstrate the personalised techniques with Lupin and then coaching us as we tried these with Monty. Each time we have a session we take away a deeper understanding of Monty’s behaviour, the reasons behind it and what he is communicating. I feel we have been exceptionally lucky to have found the Believe in Magic team to guide us as we go through the ups and downs of owning a growing puppy

Monty

Eryn is such a thoughtful, friendly and empathetic trainer & behaviourist. Has really helped build ours and our dog Orla’s confidence. We’ve got a better understanding of each other and our relationship has improved loads already. Thanks Eryn
